Apple Developing Smart Doorbell Camera with Face ID Integration

Apple is reportedly working on a smart doorbell camera equipped with Face ID technology, allowing users to unlock their doors with just a glance. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the device could debut as early as the end of 2025.

How It Works

The smart doorbell camera would function similarly to Face ID on an iPhone or iPad. When a recognized resident approaches, the camera would automatically unlock the door. The system is expected to feature Apple’s Secure Enclave chip, which securely stores and processes biometric data independently of the rest of the hardware. This ensures a high level of privacy and security for users.

Integration with Existing Systems

Gurman suggests that the doorbell camera will likely be compatible with HomeKit-enabled smart locks, enabling seamless integration into existing smart home ecosystems. Apple may also collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to offer a complete system at launch, providing consumers with a one-stop solution.

The device is expected to utilize Apple’s in-house “Proxima” chip, which combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. This chip is also rumored to appear in updated versions of the HomePod Mini and Apple TV expected next year.

Part of a Larger Smart Home Push

The doorbell camera is part of Apple’s broader strategy to expand its smart home product lineup, potentially branded under Apple Intelligence. Other rumored products include:

  • A new smart home camera with enhanced features.
  • Apple-branded TV devices.
  • Smart home displays, including:
    • A magnetic iPad-like device that attaches to wall mounts or speaker bases.
    • A more advanced display mounted on a robotic arm for dynamic positioning and functionality.

The Bigger Picture

Apple’s foray into smart doorbell cameras signals its commitment to creating a unified smart home ecosystem that emphasizes privacy, security, and ease of use. By leveraging Face ID and HomeKit integration, Apple aims to provide a cutting-edge smart home experience for its users, potentially setting a new standard in the industry.
