YouTube Launches Free AI Tool to Create Custom Background Music for Videos

YouTube is rolling out a new AI-powered tool that lets creators generate instrumental background music for their videos—completely free and copyright-safe, according to a report from TechCrunch. The new feature was introduced in a recent video on YouTube’s Creator Insider channel.

In the demo, host Lauren unveils a new tab in the Creator Music beta called “Music assistant.” Here, creators can type in prompts like “uplifting and motivational music for a workout montage” and receive a selection of AI-generated tracks. These can be previewed, downloaded, and dropped straight into your video editor. Lauren mentions that the tool is being gradually released to users already enrolled in the Creator Music beta.

This move places YouTube among a growing list of platforms embracing AI-generated audio. Stability AI, for example, offers a diffusion-based audio model, while Meta has introduced open-source tools like AudioCraft and MusicGen to turn text prompts into music and sound effects.

YouTube’s been experimenting with AI in music for a while. It previously introduced a music remixer for Shorts, allowing users to rework existing tracks, and the Dream Track feature, powered by Google DeepMind’s Lyria, which turns simple humming into full tracks in the style of artists like T-Pain.

Now with Music assistant, YouTube is giving creators yet another powerful, accessible tool to bring their videos to life—no music license headaches required.
