Google Is Testing AI-Generated Podcasts in Search Results

Google is experimenting with a new feature that turns search results into short, podcast-style audio clips powered by AI. Part of the company’s Labs program, the feature—called Audio Overviews—is now being tested on mobile devices in the U.S. for English-language searches.

Here’s how it works: if you search for something like “How do noise-cancelling headphones work?”, you might see a “Generate Audio Overview” button just below the “People also ask” section. Tap it, and Google will take up to 40 seconds to create a brief audio segment.

Once generated, the clip appears directly within your search results inside a small audio player. You can play, pause, mute, or adjust the speed of the audio. The content is narrated by two lively, AI-generated “hosts” who explain the topic in an engaging and conversational style. Beneath the player, you’ll find links to the sources used to generate the overview.

Google has been steadily expanding the use of Audio Overviews since launching them last year. They’ve already been integrated into tools like NotebookLM and Gemini, where they can summarize research notes or documents into spoken discussions. Now, with this search integration, Google is bringing that functionality directly into the everyday search experience—offering a more dynamic and accessible way to explore information.
