Roblox is gearing up to introduce paid video games on its platform and will soon allow developers to sell physical merchandise within their games, the company announced on Friday.
At its developers conference, Roblox revealed plans to enable creators to price certain games—referred to as “experiences”—in real-world currency for desktop users. Developers could earn up to 70% of the revenue, though the exact share will depend on the game’s price point.
These paid experiences are set to launch on personal computers later this year, with plans to extend the feature to other devices in the future.
This marks a shift from Roblox’s long-standing model of free-to-play games, which has largely focused on users purchasing in-game currency, “Robux,” to buy virtual items like cosmetics and collectibles in the platform’s digital worlds.
“We’re introducing new ways for our creators to monetize their work by offering paid access experiences,” said Enrico D’Angelo, Roblox’s vice president of economy.
Roblox, which thrives on user-generated content, has been successful in fostering a massive creator ecosystem. Over the past year, the company has paid out more than $800 million to its community of developers who create popular games that attract millions of users.
Additionally, Roblox will partner with Shopify, starting next year, to allow creators to sell physical merchandise directly from their games.
