Meta to start using public posts on Facebook, Instagram in UK to train AI

Meta is set to resume training its AI models using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK in the coming months, after halting the process due to regulatory concerns.

The company plans to use public posts, including photos, captions, and comments, to enhance its generative AI models. However, Meta clarified that private messages and content from users under 18 will not be included in this data collection.

This move comes after Meta paused its AI model development in Europe in mid-June following instructions from the Irish privacy regulator to delay the initiative, which sought to use social media data for AI training. At the time, Meta also indicated it would use the pause to address concerns raised by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

“Since pausing the training of our generative AI models in the UK, we’ve worked closely with the ICO to address regulatory feedback. This clarity allows us to bring AI-powered Meta products to the UK much sooner,” the company stated.

Starting next week, Facebook and Instagram users in the UK will receive notifications explaining Meta’s process and how they can opt out of having their data used for AI training. According to the ICO, Meta has made adjustments to its original approach, simplifying the process for users to object to data processing and extending the timeframe for opting out.
