Google CEO Sundar Pichai announces $120M fund for global AI education

Speaking at the UN Summit of the Future on Saturday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted AI as “the most transformative technology to date” and unveiled a global initiative to boost AI education and training.

Pichai outlined four key areas where AI can drive progress toward sustainable development: improving access to information in diverse languages, speeding up scientific breakthroughs, providing early warnings for climate-related disasters, and fostering economic growth.

While acknowledging the potential dangers of AI, such as the misuse of deepfakes, Pichai did not address the technology’s environmental impact.

Pichai stressed the importance of preventing a global “AI divide” and announced Google’s commitment of $120 million to a Global AI Opportunity Fund. This initiative, in collaboration with local nonprofits and NGOs, will focus on expanding access to AI education and training across different communities worldwide.

Additionally, Pichai advocated for “smart product regulation” to manage risks without stifling innovation. He warned that poorly designed regulations could deepen the AI divide and hinder its positive contributions.
