Apple may release an iPad-like smart home display next year

Apple is reportedly gearing up to reenter the smart home market with a new iPad-like smart display, expected to launch next year. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the device will run on a fresh operating system called homeOS, which is based on the existing tvOS that powers Apple TV and HomePods.

Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that this upcoming smart display will support Apple apps like Calendar, Notes, and Home. Prototypes have been tested with magnetic wall-mounting features, and unlike HomePods, it is expected to include Apple Intelligence capabilities.

Rumors about Apple working on such a device have been circulating for some time. Early reports suggested potential designs, ranging from a HomePod with a screen to a more innovative concept with a display on a robotic arm that could follow users during video calls. More recent leaks indicate that the upcoming product, dubbed “HomeAccessory,” might have a square form factor and possibly allow users to control it using hand gestures from a distance, according to 9to5Mac.

Compared to some of Apple’s more experimental ideas, this smart display sounds more practical. It could offer a simpler and more affordable solution for managing a smart home than using an iPad as a dedicated controller. The official release date remains uncertain, but the launch doesn’t seem too far off.
