A groundbreaking AI-powered camera designed to detect motorists under the influence of alcohol or drugs is being trialed in Devon and Cornwall, marking a global first for this technology.
The advanced “Heads-Up” system monitors road use and driving behavior to identify signs consistent with impairment due to drink or drugs. If flagged by the camera, police stationed further along the road can stop the vehicle, interact with the driver, and conduct roadside tests for alcohol and illegal substances.
Geoff Collins, UK general manager for Acusensus, the company behind the camera, expressed enthusiasm about the trial. “We are delighted to be conducting the world’s first trials of this technology right here in Devon and Cornwall,” he said.
The portable camera system can be quickly relocated to different roads without prior notice, making it difficult for drivers to anticipate its placement. Drivers remain unaware they have been identified until police intercept them. “We are all safer if we can detect impairment before it causes an incident that could ruin lives,” Collins added.
Acusensus has previously supplied cameras to help law enforcement catch drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts. With data showing that drink-drivers are six times more likely to be involved in fatal accidents, Devon and Cornwall Police are optimistic that the “Heads-Up” system could significantly improve road safety.
Superintendent Simon Jenkinson, whose team oversees the 14,000 miles of roads in the two counties, emphasized the importance of adopting new technology. “Our officers cannot be everywhere,” he said. “As members of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, we’re committed to doing everything we can to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads. Embracing emerging technology such as these cameras is vital in that quest.”
The trial, which coincides with other drink-driving awareness campaigns, will run throughout December. Authorities hope the system will become an essential tool in preventing accidents and saving lives.
