OpenAI Set to Launch GPT-5 in August

OpenAI is gearing up to release its next-generation AI model, GPT-5, in early August, according to sources familiar with the company’s rollout plans. The launch follows a series of delays tied to infrastructure upgrades, extensive safety evaluations, and internal testing.

Although CEO Sam Altman has publicly stated that GPT-5 is coming “soon,” insiders told The Verge last week that the release could happen as early as next month. The new model will reportedly unify capabilities from OpenAI’s previous “o-series” reasoning tools into a single, more powerful system. GPT-5 will be available through both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API, with a lightweight “mini” version for less intensive tasks and a “nano” version designed exclusively for developers via API.

According to The Information, one of GPT-5’s standout features will be enhanced coding performance. Altman has hinted at even broader potential, remarking on a podcast that he once felt “useless” in comparison to the model during a demo. Rumors have also suggested that GPT-5 might be capable of deciphering a 3,000-year-old language that has long baffled scholars.

If these reports prove accurate, the countdown is nearly over—GPT-5 could be just a week or two away from going live.
