Google has added a whimsical new feature to its Gemini AI chatbot, giving users the ability to create custom, illustrated bedtime stories with just a short description. The tool, called Storybook, automatically generates 10-page tales — each page containing a brief paragraph of text (which Gemini can read aloud) alongside an AI-generated illustration.
Users can tailor their stories by specifying art styles inspired by claymation, anime, comics, and more. You can even upload your own images for Gemini to incorporate — for example, turning a child’s drawing into the star of the story.
In testing the feature, I asked Gemini to write about a shy catfish trying to make friends in a new aquarium. The plot — involving the tank’s residents attempting to move a marble — was simple and predictable. But the visuals offered some surprises, such as a fish sporting a very human-looking arm.
Other experiments produced equally odd moments: spaghetti sauce rendered like a cartoon crime scene, or a mother and son watching a TV screen inexplicably placed on the wrong side of the set. Even Google’s own promotional video contains a quirky touch — a woman “building” a spaceship while tapping away with a wrench and an unidentifiable tool.
Beyond occasional inconsistencies in character design, most generated stories looked fairly standard for AI-created children’s books. Still, Gemini didn’t quite capture my artistic intent when I uploaded my own cartoon cat drawing.
The Storybook feature is now available globally on desktop and mobile, in all languages currently supported by Gemini.
