OpenAI has rolled out a major update for ChatGPT aimed at making it far more useful in professional and educational environments. The new “company knowledge” feature, now available for Business, Enterprise, and Education users, allows ChatGPT to search across a company’s internal tools—like Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and GitHub—without users needing to switch between apps.
Powered by GPT-5, this upgrade transforms ChatGPT into a conversational search engine that can instantly pull relevant data from across your organization. Whether it’s preparing for a client call, reviewing team goals, or gathering project updates, ChatGPT can now pull insights from multiple platforms at once.
For example, OpenAI says the chatbot could automatically generate a briefing using messages from your team’s Slack channel, client emails, notes from Google Docs, and updates from Intercom support tickets—all compiled into a single, cited response. Each answer includes clear citations, showing exactly where the information came from to help users verify accuracy and trust the results.
The feature can also interpret ambiguous queries—like “Where did we land on company goals for next year?”—by searching across different data sources and comparing perspectives to deliver a consistent summary. ChatGPT even applies date filters and “thinks while it searches,” enabling it to surface time-sensitive insights more effectively.
While company knowledge must be manually activated for new conversations, OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can still use integrated apps even when the feature is off—though responses will be less detailed and won’t include citations. During company knowledge sessions, ChatGPT also can’t browse the web or generate images and charts.
OpenAI plans to expand this capability further in the coming months, bringing the same integrated knowledge access to more ChatGPT tools and workflows—making GPT-5 not just a chatbot, but a true workplace intelligence engine.
