AI startup Perplexity has launched a new assistant-like feature for Android, aiming to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and established voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
Backed by Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, the company unveiled Perplexity Assistant, an AI-powered tool capable of booking reservations, hailing rides, setting reminders, and more. The feature supports 15 languages and is now available on the Google Play Store.
While the assistant is currently exclusive to Android, Perplexity hopes to expand to iOS—if Apple grants the necessary permissions.
This launch follows OpenAI’s recent rollout of “Tasks” for ChatGPT Team and Pro subscribers. Meanwhile, Amazon and Apple continue advancing their own AI assistants. Apple has integrated Apple Intelligence into Siri and partnered with OpenAI to offer ChatGPT functionality. Amazon is also preparing to release an upgraded Alexa, with CEO Andy Jassy hinting at a major update in the coming months.
