Apple to Power Next-Gen Siri with Custom Google Gemini AI Model in $1 Billion Deal

Apple is reportedly preparing to power its upgraded Siri with a custom-built version of Google’s Gemini AI, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The partnership could see Apple paying Google around $1 billion per year for access to the technology, which will be used to handle complex tasks like generating summaries and managing planning functions.

Bloomberg notes that Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers will host this special version of Gemini, ensuring that user data remains secure. At the same time, Apple’s own in-house AI models will continue to support other Siri features. Gurman’s report adds that the custom Gemini model will run on 1.2 trillion parameters — a massive leap compared to the 150 billion parameters powering Apple’s existing cloud-based models.

The collaboration follows several months of internal debate at Apple over how best to accelerate its delayed rollout of AI-powered Siri features. Earlier reports indicated that Apple had considered partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic before choosing Google as its primary partner. However, this deal reportedly does not include integrating Gemini’s chatbot directly into Siri — a separate capability similar to how Apple Intelligence currently works with ChatGPT.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently confirmed that the new Siri experience is expected to launch next spring, while emphasizing that Apple remains open to further third-party AI integrations. Despite its new reliance on Google’s technology, Bloomberg reports that Apple is continuing to develop its own large-scale AI systems, with the long-term goal of eventually replacing Gemini entirely.
