Apple’s Smart Glasses Are One Step Closer to Reality, Report Says

Apple is steadily advancing the development of its own smart glasses, according to the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter. Codenamed N50, the upcoming device is expected to integrate Apple’s growing suite of AI technologies into an accessible, stylish pair of glasses.

Apple’s ultimate goal remains clear: to create industry-leading augmented reality (AR) glasses. However, a true consumer-ready AR product is still several years away.

In the meantime, Apple is focusing on a more attainable target—smart glasses similar to the popular Meta Ray-Ban collaboration. Those glasses, while lacking displays, include features like cameras, microphones, speakers, and an AI assistant—all packed into a sleek, lightweight design.

According to Gurman, Apple’s version will follow a comparable path:

“The device isn’t near completion yet, but the concept is to transform everyday glasses into an Apple Intelligence device. It will be capable of analyzing the surrounding environment and providing information to the wearer—without reaching full AR capabilities.”

Privacy remains a key concern. In past reports, Gurman noted that Apple may opt not to include photo-taking capabilities, although that decision is still under discussion.

Gurman also reiterated that Apple continues to explore AirPods with built-in cameras, another project that would extend the company’s push into “Visual Intelligence” hardware.

Both the smart glasses and camera-equipped AirPods are currently expected to launch sometime around 2027.
