fter helping shape the modern social web, Biz Stone and Evan Sharp are backing a very different kind of social experiment.
The two founders have raised fresh funding for West Co, a startup that quietly launched an invite-only version of its first app, Tangle, in November. According to reporting by the Financial Times, the company has secured $29 million in seed funding, led by Spark Capital.
Unlike traditional social platforms built around feeds, likes, and endless scrolling, Tangle starts with a simple prompt: “What’s your intention for today?” Users are encouraged to share goals, reflect on how their day actually unfolded, and connect those moments into a more meaningful personal narrative.
Sharp, who serves as West Co’s CEO, says the company was born from a difficult question: what could be built to counter at least some of the damage social media has done to the human mind and heart over the past 15 years? The initial answer is a tool focused on intention, reflection, and emotional awareness rather than performance and validation.
Stone has cautioned that Tangle is still evolving and may look very different by the time it launches publicly. But the direction is clear: fewer dopamine loops, more deliberate connection.
Whether an app can truly undo the harm caused by earlier generations of social platforms remains an open question. Still, when the people who helped create the problem start rethinking the solution, it is a signal that the industry itself may be ready for a reset.
