ChatGPT opens its own app store and invites developers to build inside the platform

OpenAI announced on Wednesday that developers can now submit apps designed to run directly inside ChatGPT, marking the official launch of what many are already calling an in-app “app store.” Alongside this move, the company rolled out a dedicated app directory inside ChatGPT’s tools menu, making it easier for users to discover and use new integrations.

The idea of apps inside ChatGPT was first introduced in October, when OpenAI said it wanted to expand what users could do within a single conversation. At the time, well-known platforms such as Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva revealed early integrations, allowing users to search, design, or plan without leaving the chat interface. With this latest update, OpenAI is now opening the door to a much wider developer community.

According to the company, apps are meant to extend conversations by adding real-world context and enabling concrete actions. These can range from ordering groceries and turning outlines into slide decks, to searching for apartments or managing everyday tasks, all from within ChatGPT.

Developers can build these integrations using OpenAI’s Apps SDK, which is currently in beta. Once ready, apps can be submitted through the OpenAI Developer platform, where creators can track the review and approval process. OpenAI says that approved apps will begin appearing inside ChatGPT over the coming year, a move that signals a major step toward building a full app ecosystem around the chatbot and keeping users engaged within a single interface.
