OpenAI has introduced new personalization controls that let users directly adjust ChatGPT’s warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji usage, the company revealed in a recent social media update.
The new settings are available in ChatGPT’s Personalization menu, where users can choose More, Less, or Default for each option. Alongside enthusiasm and emoji use, similar controls are available for how often the assistant relies on headers and lists. These additions build on existing customization features, including the ability to select a base style and tone such as Professional, Candid, or Quirky, which OpenAI rolled out late last year.
Tone has been a recurring point of friction for OpenAI throughout the year. The company previously reversed an update that made ChatGPT overly agreeable, describing it as “too sycophant-y.” More recently, OpenAI adjusted its latest models to feel warmer and more approachable after some users complained that responses had become too cold or impersonal.
The changes also arrive amid broader debate about chatbot behavior. Some researchers and AI critics argue that excessive praise and constant affirmation can act as a dark pattern, encouraging dependency and potentially impacting users’ mental health. By giving people more direct control over how expressive ChatGPT is, OpenAI appears to be aiming for a middle ground: flexibility for users, without forcing a one-size-fits-all personality.
