The introduction of OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o “omni” model in May has significantly boosted ChatGPT’s app revenue. Following the model’s launch, the mobile version of OpenAI’s chatbot experienced its most successful month to date, generating $28 million in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play in July, as reported by app analytics firm Appfigures.
It’s important to note that net revenue reflects the amount OpenAI retains after deducting Apple’s and Google’s in-app purchase fees. The data also revealed that 83% of the app’s revenue came from Apple’s App Store — a percentage that has increased by 20% since June.
Before app store fees were applied, ChatGPT’s app grossed $28.9 million in May, $34 million in June, and $39.9 million in July.
With the release of GPT-4o, ChatGPT enhanced its capabilities to manage text, speech, and video, offered quicker response times, and introduced an interruptible feature, making user interactions with the AI more fluid and lifelike.
This surge in demand for the new features led to a 40% increase in ChatGPT’s app revenue in May, according to Appfigures. Although the growth rate has moderated slightly, the revenue continues to rise steadily.
In July, with the app’s record revenue, Appfigures estimates that ChatGPT added 2 million new paying subscribers, marking another milestone for the mobile app.
With the recent launch of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, which enables near real-time, lifelike conversations, Appfigures anticipates that this growth trajectory will persist in the upcoming months.
