EU Investigates Child Safety Measures on Snapchat, YouTube, and Major App Stores

The European Commission has launched an investigation into how platforms like Snapchat, YouTube, the Apple App Store, and Google Play protect minors online, under the EU’s landmark Digital Services Act (DSA).

Officials have requested detailed information from these companies about their age verification systems and the measures they use to block minors from accessing illegal products — such as drugs and vapes — as well as harmful content, including material that promotes eating disorders.

“Together with national authorities across member states, we are now evaluating whether the steps taken by these platforms truly ensure children’s safety online,” said EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen.

The DSA obliges digital platforms to take stronger action against illegal and harmful content, making this review a key test of how effectively Europe’s new online safety rules are being enforced.
