Expedia is tapping into the power of social media to help users turn travel inspiration into real-world adventures.
The Seattle-based travel platform unveiled a beta version of Expedia Trip Matching on Friday—a new AI-powered feature that lets users build custom itineraries and book trips based on travel content they encounter on Instagram Reels.
Here’s how it works: Travelers can share any publicly available travel-related Reel with @Expedia on Instagram. In response, Expedia’s AI generates personalized travel suggestions, itineraries, and planning tools based on the content of the video. Users can then review and book their trip directly from the curated recommendations.
With this launch, Expedia becomes the first online travel agency to offer real-time, AI-driven trip planning directly within the Instagram platform.
“It’s no secret people are getting their news, inspiration, and travel ideas from influencers and content creators,” said Jochen Koedijk, Chief Marketing Officer at Expedia Group. “A recent study shows that 80% of millennials rely on social media for travel decisions. We want to meet consumers where they get inspired—on social.”
Trip Matching will roll out to U.S. users in the coming weeks.
The announcement comes shortly after Expedia reported lower-than-expected earnings on Thursday, with shares dropping more than 8%. The company cited reduced domestic demand and a notable decline in inbound travel from Canada as key challenges.
