Google Developing New AI ‘Computer-Using Agent’ System

Google is reportedly developing an AI tool, codenamed Project Jarvis, aimed at helping users manage various online tasks more efficiently. According to a report from The Information, this project could be previewed as early as December and would enable users to perform actions like researching, online shopping, and booking flights, with minimal manual input. Jarvis will be integrated with Google’s Gemini large language model, which will analyze browser screenshots, click buttons, and enter text automatically within Chrome, providing a near real-time response by completing tasks in just a few seconds.

The concept behind Jarvis isn’t isolated, as major tech firms are also exploring similar AI-driven assistants. Microsoft, for instance, has introduced Copilot Vision, an AI assistant that allows users to discuss and explore the contents of web pages interactively. Apple’s upcoming Apple Intelligence system aims to streamline the user experience by enabling the AI to operate seamlessly across multiple apps and interfaces. Additionally, Anthropic is working on a feature within its Claude model, though it’s currently described as “cumbersome” and still in the beta stage. OpenAI, another key player in AI, is reportedly advancing a model designed to handle similar computer-based tasks.

While the target release for a demo version of Jarvis is December, Google has yet to make firm commitments on the timeline. The development team plans to roll it out to a small group of users initially to identify any bugs and ensure smooth functioning, allowing them to fine-tune the product further before any broader release. This phased testing approach highlights Google’s cautious approach to launching such an innovative AI assistant.
