Meta has introduced a new update for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, adding helpful features that were initially previewed at last month’s Connect event. One of the key additions is the ability to set reminders through Meta AI, allowing users to ask the assistant to remember details like where they parked or to schedule reminders for tasks like making a phone call.
Additional features in this update include the capability to record and send voice messages via WhatsApp or Messenger without the need to take out your phone. Meta AI can now also scan QR codes or dial phone numbers it encounters, further enhancing the glasses’ hands-free utility.
There’s also a change in how users interact with Meta AI. Previously, users needed to say “Hey Meta” before every query. With this update, users only need to say it for the first question, after which they can continue asking additional questions without repeating the wake word. Furthermore, the command to say “look and” when asking about visual information is no longer necessary.
These updates are currently available only in the U.S. and Canada. To access the new features, users need to update the Meta View app on iOS or Android to version 186, which began rolling out on Wednesday. Along with this software upgrade, Meta announced that the limited edition translucent Ray-Ban models have already sold out online, though some may still be available in stores.
It’s been nearly a year since Meta launched the $299 Ray-Ban smart glasses, and they’ve made notable progress, particularly with earlier updates that allowed them to process images, text, and audio. Future updates will further enhance their functionality by adding real-time translation capabilities for English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
However, Meta has yet to publicly address concerns about the potential misuse of the glasses for privacy violations, an issue recently raised by two college students regarding the risk of doxxing.
