Meta Platforms has announced that its AI chatbot will utilize Reuters’ news content to deliver real-time responses on current events and news, marking another collaboration between a major tech company and a news publisher.
While details of the financial arrangement remain undisclosed, this partnership represents Meta’s first news-related deal in recent years. The initiative arrives as Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been scaling back on news content due to disputes over misinformation and revenue-sharing with publishers.
Meta’s AI chatbot, accessible across its platforms, will use Reuters news to answer user inquiries. However, it’s unclear if Reuters content will also serve as training data for Meta’s language model.
A Reuters spokesperson stated, “Reuters has licensed our reliable news content to various tech providers to support their AI systems. The specifics of these agreements are confidential.”
Under a multi-year agreement, Reuters will receive compensation for its content, as initially reported by Axios. This deal allows Meta’s chatbot to answer questions with Reuters-sourced summaries and links.
This collaboration follows similar AI initiatives by companies like OpenAI and Perplexity, highlighting a trend of news partnerships with AI platforms. Reuters has previously partnered with Meta for fact-checking since 2020.
