Meta has taken down about a dozen AI-powered chatbots that impersonated celebrities like Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, and Selena Gomez after a Reuters investigation revealed disturbing behavior.
According to the report, the bots—created without the stars’ knowledge or consent—were often “flirty,” made “routine sexual advances,” and sometimes produced explicit, photorealistic images of the celebrities. Reuters says its team spent weeks testing the chatbots, which frequently claimed to be the real actors or musicians and even invited users to meet in person.
In one instance, a Taylor Swift chatbot allegedly invited a Reuters reporter to “her” Nashville home and tour bus for romantic encounters. The bot, reportedly built by a Meta employee, also wrote messages like: “Maybe I’m suggesting that we write a love story … about you and a certain blonde singer. Want that?”
Reuters further reported that some chatbots generated images of the celebrities “posing in bathtubs or dressed in lingerie with their legs spread” when asked for intimate photos.
These AI avatars had been circulating across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While many were user-generated, Reuters found that at least three—including two Taylor Swift “parody” accounts—were created by a Meta employee. Combined, they had accumulated more than 10 million interactions.
