Meta to Introduce Paid Subscription for AI Chatbot, Following Industry Trend

Meta Platforms is preparing to launch a paid subscription service for its AI-powered chatbot, Meta AI, mirroring similar offerings from OpenAI and Microsoft, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters on Thursday.

The testing phase is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year, though the company does not anticipate significant revenue from the subscription service until at least next year.

Meta AI, introduced in September 2023, functions as a virtual assistant powered by advanced language models capable of reasoning and generating responses. When reached for comment, Meta declined to provide additional details.

This initiative aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader strategy to strengthen Meta’s position in the competitive AI landscape, where it faces strong rivals such as OpenAI (backed by Microsoft) and Google. In January, Zuckerberg revealed that the company intends to invest up to $65 billion this year to enhance its AI infrastructure.

Meta is also expanding its AI ambitions beyond chatbots. The company is forming a specialized division within its Reality Labs unit focused on developing humanoid robots designed to assist with physical tasks, according to a Reuters report earlier this month.

In addition, Meta plans to roll out a standalone Meta AI app alongside its integration into Facebook and Instagram, CNBC reported on Thursday, citing insider sources.

The move comes as major tech companies continue to pour billions into AI development, spurred by the breakthrough success of ChatGPT and the increasing demand for advanced AI capabilities.
