Microsoft Opens Testing for AI-Powered Windows Search

Microsoft has begun testing its AI-enhanced Windows search functionality in a new developer channel build for Windows 11 Insider testers. Originally announced in October, this feature leverages semantic indexing to allow users to search for local files using natural, conversational language. As with other Microsoft AI features, access requires a Copilot Plus PC.

The AI-powered search works seamlessly across the search boxes in Settings, File Explorer, and the taskbar. Importantly, it operates offline, thanks to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) chips found in Copilot Plus-enabled computers. Currently, the feature is limited to searching within Windows settings and specific file types, including JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS.

To use the feature effectively, users must index the file locations they wish to include. This can be configured under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, with an option to turn on “Enhanced” mode for indexing the entire machine. Microsoft also plans to extend the search capability to include cloud-based data, such as files stored in OneDrive.

The rollout will initially target Windows Insiders using Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs, with support for Intel and AMD Copilot Plus devices to follow. The feature supports multiple languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Additional Updates

The latest build also introduces AI-driven writing tools under the Click to Do feature. Users can hold the Windows key and left-click on the screen to access context-sensitive menus. For example, when clicking on a text block and selecting Rewrite, a new “Refine” option provides grammar correction, enhancing writing accuracy and clarity.

These updates represent Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI tools into Windows, aiming to boost productivity and streamline user experiences.
