OpenAI Reportedly Preparing to Launch an AI-Powered Web Browser

OpenAI may be gearing up to release its own AI-enhanced web browser in the coming weeks, according to a new report from Reuters. The browser is expected to integrate OpenAI’s “Operator” agent, which could handle tasks like booking reservations, filling out forms, and completing various online actions on behalf of users—marking another step toward a more autonomous, “agentic” web experience.

Unlike traditional browsers, this new product will reportedly feature a built-in, native ChatGPT interface. That means users could interact with OpenAI’s chatbot directly within the browser, without having to visit the ChatGPT website.

Sources say the browser will be built on Chromium, Google’s open-source engine that powers major browsers such as Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.

OpenAI’s move comes just days after Perplexity, another AI startup, launched its own Chromium-based browser, Comet, for premium subscribers. Priced at $200 per month, Comet uses Perplexity’s AI search engine by default and includes a built-in assistant. If OpenAI enters the browser space, it could intensify competition with Google—especially as the tech giant faces pressure from a federal antitrust case that may force it to sell off Chrome. Both OpenAI and Perplexity have expressed interest in acquiring the browser if that happens.

Rumors of an OpenAI browser have circulated before. Last year, The Information reported that the company was actively exploring a browser launch and had even hired two former Google engineers closely involved in building Chrome. Since then, OpenAI has integrated its own AI search engine into ChatGPT—making the jump to a full-fledged browser a natural evolution.
