Perplexity Opens Its AI Browser Comet to the Public — but Not Entirely for Free

After a limited launch this summer for users willing to pay hundreds of dollars a month, Perplexity’s AI-driven browser Comet is now officially open to everyone — though access still comes with a price tag.

Billed as a serious rival to Google Chrome, Comet puts artificial intelligence at the center of the browsing experience. Perplexity says the internet is “better on Comet,” promising an experience where your AI assistant travels the web with you rather than being an add-on feature. The goal: make online tasks like shopping, trip planning, and everyday organization faster and easier — helping users, as the company puts it, “get more done.”

Initially launched in July, Comet was exclusive to subscribers of the $200-per-month Perplexity Max plan. It later expanded to select users on the more affordable Pro tier and to a small portion of those on the company’s reported million-plus waitlist. Now, Perplexity says anyone can use Comet — no exclusive invite required.

However, it’s not entirely free. Access to Comet is bundled with Perplexity’s Pro and Max subscriptions or available separately for $5 per month.

The company also unveiled Comet Plus, a premium package offering curated news from major publishers — a model CEO Aravind Srinivas compared to Apple News Plus. Launch partners include:

  • CNN
  • Condé Nast
  • Fortune
  • Le Figaro
  • Le Monde
  • The Los Angeles Times
  • The Washington Post

Comet Plus is included with Pro and Max subscriptions and costs $5 per month for all other users.

Perplexity joins a growing list of companies trying to merge AI and browsing. Google has brought Gemini into Chrome, The Browser Company is betting big on its AI tool Dia, and Opera recently launched its own AI-powered browser, Neon.

In short: Comet may be “available to everyone,” but it’s part of a bigger, subscription-driven push to redefine how we browse the web with AI at the helm.
