Speaking with an AI chatbot may help to reduce people’s conspiracy beliefs, study finds

A recent study suggests that ChatGPT might help reduce belief in conspiracy theories. Conducted by researchers from American University, MIT, and Cornell University, the study explored how OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo could engage with individuals who hold such beliefs.

The AI-powered chatbot interacted with over 2,100 participants, all of whom identified as conspiracy believers. After chatting with ChatGPT, participants’ belief in conspiracy theories dropped by an average of 20%, with this effect lasting for at least two months.

Lead researcher Thomas Costello, from American University, explained that many individuals were open to reconsidering their views when presented with solid counterarguments. The AI, using personalized and detailed responses, was able to address specific claims related to various conspiracy theories, from JFK’s assassination and alien cover-ups to COVID-19 and the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Researchers noted that even a brief interaction, lasting under 10 minutes, was enough to cause this shift. About 27% of participants expressed uncertainty about their conspiracy beliefs after the interaction.

While the results are promising, Robbie Sutton, a social psychologist from the University of Kent, commented that although the reduction in belief is “significant,” some traditional debunking strategies might have an even stronger effect.
