The European Commission has approved a €1.5 billion investment to establish or upgrade seven state-of-the-art AI Factories across Europe. These facilities are designed to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and drive innovation across the region.
What Will AI Factories Do?
Each AI Factory will be equipped with AI-enhanced supercomputers, large general-purpose AI (GPAI) models, and advanced programming tools. Their purpose is twofold:
- Boosting AI adoption among small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the EU.
- Advancing AI research for academic and scientific communities across the bloc.
These facilities will serve as hubs where organisations can develop, test, and refine AI algorithms, facilitating innovation in AI applications throughout Europe.
According to the Commission, the initiative aims to make AI technology more accessible and practical for businesses while solidifying Europe’s standing in the global AI race.
A Vision for an “AI Continent”
The first AI Factories are set to launch by 2025, with full implementation expected by the end of the decade. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the project as a transformative step to make Europe a global leader in artificial intelligence, calling it the dawn of an “AI continent.”
What Are AI Factories?
NVIDIA’s founder, Jensen Huang, has likened AI Factories to industrial engines of the modern age, essential for creating value and intelligence during this new “industrial revolution.”
AI Factories typically consist of four key components:
- A data pipeline to prepare and process data for AI applications.
- Algorithm development for building AI models.
- A software infrastructure, including supercomputers, to support AI training.
- An experimentation platform to test and validate AI systems.
Where Will the Factories Be Located?
The European Commission has selected seven sites for the new AI Factories:
- Barcelona, Spain
- Bissen, Luxembourg
- Bologna, Italy
- Stuttgart, Germany
- Mimer, Sweden
- Kajaani, Finland
- Athens, Greece
Several of these locations will enhance existing facilities. For instance, supercomputer infrastructure in Spain will be upgraded, while Greece’s AI Factory will launch with the DAEDALUS supercomputer, which is already operational.
