As it marks its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has announced a new wave of partnerships with leading AI and technology companies, strengthening the commercial reach of its Wikimedia Enterprise product.
Wikimedia Enterprise, developed by the foundation, enables large-scale reuse and redistribution of Wikipedia content and material from other Wikimedia projects. Designed for organizations that require reliable, high-volume access to structured knowledge, the product supports fast, scalable delivery tailored to enterprise data needs.
Beyond its previously disclosed agreement with Google in 2022, the foundation revealed for the first time that it has formed partnerships over the past year with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. The announcement also reiterates existing collaborations with Ecosia, Pleias, ProRata, Nomic, and Reef Media.
These agreements represent a strategic step for Wikipedia at a time when AI systems increasingly rely on open knowledge to generate instant, factual responses. Wikimedia Enterprise is not only a revenue stream that helps sustain Wikipedia’s operations, but also a way to ensure that companies accessing its content do so responsibly, at scale, and with up-to-date data pipelines.
According to the foundation, Wikipedia remains one of the world’s top 10 most-visited websites. Each month, readers access more than 65 million articles across 300-plus languages, generating nearly 15 billion page views worldwide.
“Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever,” said Selena Deckelmann, Wikimedia Foundation’s Chief Product and Technology Officer. She emphasized that the platform’s future depends on its global community of readers, volunteer editors, donors, and partners.
Alongside the partnership news, the foundation has launched a broader anniversary campaign. Highlights include a new video docuseries offering behind-the-scenes stories of Wikipedia volunteers around the world, as well as a “25 Years of Wikipedia” digital time capsule exploring the platform’s past, present, and future, with narration from founder Jimmy Wales.
The celebrations will culminate in a livestreamed birthday event on January 15 at 4:00 p.m. UTC, featuring guests, games, and entertainment, streamed on Wikipedia’s YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels.
The anniversary announcements also spotlight recent progress across Wikimedia’s ecosystem, including upgrades to its technical infrastructure, a clearly defined approach to AI, and new experiments such as interactive games and short-form video, all aimed at keeping human-curated knowledge accessible and relevant in an AI-driven world.
